7/22/2009This is the Confederate non-battle flag. Its nickname is the “Stars and Bars.” Most people don’t recognize this flag. That could be a good thing. When we celebrate the south I think this is the flag we should raise. The old flag polarizes. The battle flag was waved over too many bad things to ever be easily good for me. This flag is different. This, for me, is a flag we can all rally round to celebrate what is good in the South and what is to be honored in the South. This is the flag that was too pure, or just too lucky, to be shook at the school house door by men with hatchets screaming, “Segregation now! Segregation forever.” This is my flag of Faulkner and Hurston, of Thomas Jefferson and Dubois and Lee and Booker T. and Frederick Douglass, and Chuck Berry, and Elvis. This is the flag of Craig C. and Vertamae G. This flag needs a brand new song. Here’s a shout out to all you good folk who might write it.
